News: PSD Spotlights

PSD’s February spotlight is Stu Kurtz, George and Elizabeth Yovovich Professor in the Department of Computer Science. Stu has been with UChicago for 38 years and is inspired by the opportunity to positively impact his discipline and the lives of people around him.

Claire Baum is from Mount Prospect, Illinois. She holds a BS in physics from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She’s currently in her third year of pursuing a PhD in physics at the University of Chicago.
 

Kartik Singhal was born and raised in Ghaziabad, India. He holds a bachelor of technology in computer science and engineering from the National Institute of Technology Calicut and a master of science in computer science from Brown University. He also worked as a software engineer at Oracle India. He is now pursuing a doctorate in computer science at the University of Chicago.

Adam Antoszewski was born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland. He holds a BS in both physics and chemistry from the University of Virginia. He’s now in his third year of pursuing a PhD in chemistry at the University of Chicago. 

PSD’s December spotlight is Mitzi Nakatsuka, who works as a web developer in the Department of Statistics. She has been at the University for 42 years and hails from the south side of Chicago.

Shirley has been a member of the PSD for 26 years and is originally from Natchez, MS. She truly enjoys being able to apply problem-solving skills in her role of Associate Dean of Students.

Ellen works as the business administrator in the Flash Center for Computational Science in Astronomy & Astrophysics. She was born in Evanston and raised in Edgewater and Wilmette, IL. She has been a member of the PSD community for six and a half years. 

Our final spotlight of the academic year is Sandra Quarles, Project Assistant in the Department of Computer Science. Sandra hails from Chicago and has worked at the University for 29 years. She has been nominated for exemplifying the PSD core value of holding ourselves accountable and honoring commitments.

James Callahan’s hometown is Boston, Massachusetts. He completed a BA in chemistry and physics at Harvard University and then taught high school physics for two years on the North Shore of Boston. Most recently, he worked as a research and teaching assistant at Harvard. He’s now in his second year of pursuing a PhD at the University of Chicago in chemistry.

Emily Smith was born and raised in Kansas City, Kansas. She attended the University of Kansas and earned a BS in physics and computer science. She’s currently in her second year of pursuing a PhD in physics at the University of Chicago.

Sarah Brown was born and raised in Montreal, Canada. Prior to coming to the University of Chicago, she completed a BS in Honours Physics & Chemistry at McGill University. She’s currently a fourth-year student in the Department of Chemistry’s PhD program. We interviewed her via email about her experiences at UChicago.

Tae Kim was born and raised in Seoul, South Korea and moved to the US in 10th grade. Prior to attending the University of Chicago, she studied math and economics at Cornell and worked at an insurance company in Seoul. She is now in her fourth year at UChicago, pursuing a PhD in statistics. We interviewed her via email about her experiences at UChicago.

Launching our PSD Spotlight series is Victor Gavin. Victor is a Building Manager in the Department of the Geophysical Sciences. We interviewed Gavin about his interests and experiences below.

Andrés Moya Rodriguez was born and raised in Puerto Rico. Prior to coming to the University of Chicago, he completed a BS in chemistry at the University of Puerto Rico Mayaguez Campus and did a year-long post-baccalaureate program at Yale University. He's currently in his third year of studying biophysical sciences at UChicago. We interviewed him via email about his experiences at UChicago.
