UChicago BIG program funds ambitious, risky scientific research

Assistant Professor in the Department of the Geophysical Sciences, Maureen Coleman, and microbiologist Sean Crosson use water samples from Lake Michigan to study the genes of model microbes in their natural habitats. The research project led by Crosson and Coleman was one of 20 projects funded through BIG’s pilot program that went on to receive follow-up federal funding to expand the research.
