Chiza Mwinde

Chiza Mwinde, a fifth-year PhD student in the Department of the Geophysical Sciences, focuses on measuring element variations in evaporite minerals, which helps reconstruct factors like the pH and elemental composition of ancient seawater. Scientists rely on these reconstructions to learn what Earth’s climate was like in the past. Born in Zimbabwe, Chiza worked as a geochemistry research assistant at the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory before joining UChicago. There, she gained valuable hands-on experience in isotopic analysis and geochemical research. We interviewed Chiza about her experiences at UChicago.

Why did you choose the University of Chicago?

Primarily because of the opportunity to work with my advisor, Assistant Professor Clara Blättler. Her expertise in geochemical problems related to Earth history and chemical oceanography aligned perfectly with my research interests. When I joined, she had just started her lab, and I was excited about the chance to learn new geochemical analytical methods and contribute to a growing research group.

Another important factor for me was the support UChicago offers for career development. I wasn’t sure what path I would take after my PhD, so knowing that UChicago had dedicated resources for PhD students through UChicago Grad was a big draw.

Please describe something you are proud of accomplishing at UChicago.

One of my proudest accomplishments has been developing new analytical methods in our lab. My research focuses on measuring boron in a variety of mineral and seawater samples, which helps reconstruct past seawater pH. Through this project, I had to establish methods for isolating boron from complex samples and then measure both the boron concentrations and isotopic ratios using advanced ICP-MS techniques. This was a new capability for our lab, and I'm proud of the fact that I was able to contribute to building this process from the ground up. It’s been an incredibly rewarding learning experience.

What has been your most memorable class and why?

College Teaching and Course Design. I’m passionate about teaching, and this course introduced me to new concepts that have not only made me a better teacher but also improved how I approach learning myself.

What is your favorite restaurant or food truck in Hyde Park? What is your favorite dish?

Medici is my favorite spot, especially the bakery. Their biscuits are amazing!

What is your favorite campus spot and why?

Fairgrounds Cafe is my go-to. I like grabbing a table there to work, it has a great atmosphere, and the coffee keeps me going!

What’s something you love to do outside of the classroom and lab?

I love visiting art museums, particularly the Art Institute of Chicago. It’s a great way to switch gears and use a different part of my brain. I especially like the Modern Art Wing, and getting free access through the University makes it easy to visit often.

What’s the coolest thing you’ve done in the city so far?

Seeing Beyoncé’s Renaissance Tour here in Chicago was one of the highlights. Chicago has such a great music scene, and being able to see my favorite artists perform is always exciting.

What support have you received at UChicago that was particularly valuable to you?

UChicago Grad, especially as I get closer to finishing my PhD. Their career exploration resources, seminars, and workshops have given me great insight into the many paths I could take after graduation. The staff there have been really helpful in providing advice and guidance throughout this process.

How has your background or experience prepared you to contribute to an environment where diversity and inclusion are valued?

Coming from Zimbabwe and being a part of diverse academic communities throughout my educational career has given me a deep appreciation for different perspectives. I strive to create inclusive spaces where everyone’s voice is valued, whether it’s in the lab or in the classroom.

What advice or insights do you have for new or prospective Maroons?

Don’t be afraid to seek out opportunities and resources across the University! UChicago has so much to offer, both academically and for personal growth. Be curious, ask questions, and take advantage of all the support available!

What are your plans post-UChicago?

Currently, I’m still undecided about the exact path I’ll take after UChicago. Throughout my PhD, I’ve discovered a broad range of interests. I’m in the process of exploring opportunities in both academia and industry to find the right fit. My advisor and UChicago Grad have been incredibly helpful in supporting this exploration, providing resources and guidance as I navigate my next steps.
