PhD Students Receiving a Transitional Master's Degree
Some PhD programs offer students the option to receive a Master’s degree during their PhD program after completing the necessary academic requirements. If you are a PhD student planning to receive your transitional Master's degree and continue on in your program to receive your PhD at a later date, you can use the following instructions to apply to graduate for your Master's degree only:
- To apply to graduate, either log in to https://my.uchicago.edu (under the My Academics tab) or visit https://applytograduate.uchicago.edu
- Click or hover over “Academics” and select “My Academics”
- You should see a page labeled “Summary” or “Plan Program Information” and see a pencil/editing icon
- Click the pencil/editing icon to update the graduation quarter to the quarter you expect to receive your transitional MS
- Once you update your expected graduation date to the quarter you expect to receive your transitional MS, click the "Submit Your Application" link
- You will see a link to apply for both your MS and PhD or just one
- Select the MS only
- Complete the required fields in your application to graduate
- When you have successfully submitted your application to graduate, return to the screen that shows your expected graduation date
- Update your expected graduation date to reflect the quarter you expect to receive your PhD
