“Interactions Of Solar Geoengineering With Mitigation And Other Climate Responses” presented by Professor Barbara Koremenos (Political Science at the University of Michigan) and Professor Edward A. Parson (School of Law at the University of California, Los Angeles).
In this seminar, we will address interactions between solar geoengineering and other elements of climate response. We focus in particular on the claim frequently advanced to reject research and study on solar geoengineering: that it would harm total climate response by displacing or weakening emissions-cutting efforts. We examine the claim’s theoretical underpinnings and available evidence, and its use and antecedents in climate debates. We then assess proposed approaches to identifying and mitigating such destructive interactions and consider potential institutional innovations that might make the major elements of climate response mutually reinforcing.
Background reading will be circulated a week in advance.
Lunch will be served.
