"Broader Impacts" are the set of outcomes established by the National Science Foundation that encourage scientists to use their research and knowledge to improve society at large. The National Science Foundation values the advancement of scientific knowledge and activities that contribute to the achievement of societally relevant outcomes. Students who apply for the GRFP need to demonstrate their commitment to broader impacts.
The Broader Impacts Fair provides an opportunity for students to meet and volunteer with local and university organizations to further the reach of their scientific work—through educational institutions, museums, community development organizations, public policy initiatives, and student-led programs.
The virtual Broader Impacts Fair will be held on Thursday, October 8, 12:45-2:30 PM. Organizations will be grouped into one of four Zoom rooms, as listed below. Although listed by these four themes, most of the organizations have volunteer opportunities across two or more of these themes. So sign up for multiple sessions to meet as many organizations as possible! The four Zoom rooms will meet concurrently, but will be repeated three times, so you will have time to visit one, two, or three rooms.
All College and graduate students (whether or not applying to the GRFP) are welcome to attend the Broader Impacts Fair and to volunteer with any organization.
Representatives from 17 university and local organizations will be grouped together in four thematic rooms:
Mentoring Opportunities: These organizations provide opportunities for UChicago students to mentor younger scientists.
Engineering/Technology Opportunities: These organizations provide opportunities for UChicago students to help younger students learn concepts and skills related to engineering and technology.
Development/Organizing Opportunities: These organizations are looking for volunteers to help them expand their capacity to bring science to broader audiences.
Tutoring Opportunities: These organizations provide opportunities for UChicago students to tutor younger scientists.
Although listed by these four themes, most of the organizations have volunteer opportunties across two or more of these themes. So sign up for multiple sessions to meet as many organizations as possible!
You do not have to attend earlier sessions in order to attend later sessions.
