Last week, Dr. Thomas Zurbuchen, Associate Administrator of NASA Science Mission Directorate, visited the Physical Sciences Division to tour facilities and meet with faculty, students, and UChicago leaders.

At UChicago’s inaugural Data Science Institute Summit on May 9, the initiative unveiled a new data portal that combines public and private data from 20 cities around the nation. The website makes data accessible to governments, community groups, data scientists and other interested stakeholders seeking to improve internet connectivity to mitigate the “digital divide.”

This month PSD researchers have been featured for their efforts to find axion particles with new detector designs, advocate for paleobiology and evolutionary biology, and lead the S4 collaboration to design the next generation of telescopes detecting the light of the Cosmic Microwave Background.

A top flight of architects and structural engineers will present public lectures on some of the most innovative work being done in contemporary structural design as part of a unique physics undergraduate course offered this Spring Quarter at the University of Chicago, Physics & Contemporary Architecture (PHSC11800) taught by Professors Sid Nagel and Heinrich Jaeger. Enrolled undergraduate students, as well as the interested public, can join online for free Thursdays at 5:30 p.m. CST.

A new pilot program from the UChicago Financial Education Initiative is facilitating conversations about money for local area families. Funded by the University of Chicago Women’s Board, Family Money Night brings parents, kids, and schools together in a uniquely research-based experience.
 

Physicist Sidney Nagel is part of a new exhibition that brings together faculty and artists to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Gray Center's Mellon Collaborative Fellowship in Arts Practice and Scholarship.

This month PSD researchers have been featured for their efforts to read out a qubit on demand and set a record for preserving quantum states for more than five seconds, to revolutionize the field of 2D materials with a technique to cut and stack fragile sheets of nanomaterials, and to demonstrate ultracold atoms can segregate into separate domain states.

A statue of KICP postdoctoral fellow Burçin Mutlu-Pakdil will be featured in The Smithsonian’s Women’s History Month presentation of “#IfThenSheCan - The Exhibit,” a collection of 120 statues of women in STEM that will be on display in the Smithsonian gardens March 5–27. 

University Communications invites all members of the UChicago community to submit images from their scientific research for a “Science as Art” contest. The deadline to enter is March 15.

This month PSD researchers have been featured for their efforts to mitigate the noise problem on quantum computers, to use doppler calculations to make a new map of twelve streams of stars orbiting our galactic halo, and to improve control over vacancies in silicon carbide used for quantum devices.

A gathering hosted by the University of Chicago and the University of California, Santa Barbara, brought together experts from industry, government, and academia for panels and conversations around internet equity and access.

Marcela Carena is a professor of physics at the University of Chicago and a member of the Enrico Fermi Institute and the Kavli Institute for Cosmological Physics. On Oct. 26, she delivered the virtual Harper Lecture, “The Unseen Universe: How It Impacts the World We See,” with introductions from Dean Angela V. Olinto.

This month PSD researchers have been featured for their efforts to invent chemical haptics, to detect internet censorship in real time, and to extract water from the air of even the driest deserts.

On Tuesday, November 16, members of the University of Chicago Physical Sciences Division attended the Second Annual PSD Staff Awards. The virtual gathering honored staff members nominated by their divisional peers, colleagues, students, and supervisors for their dedication, hard work, and commitment to the PSD. Winners included Mat Wimberly, Dept. of Mathematics, Out of the Box Award; Sierra Sterling, Dean of Students Office, Bridgebuilder Award; and Karin Czaplewski, Dept. of Computer Science, Keystone Award.

This month PSD researchers have been featured for their efforts to create materials that can move and block heat, use a massive accelerator to analyze dust from an asteroid, and build wearable devices for signing ASL and playing piano.
