The following department chair, director, and deputy dean appointments and reappointments, effective July 1, 2026, have been announced.
Greg Engel
Greg Engel, Professor in the Department of Chemistry, the James Franck Institute, the Institute for Biophysical Dynamics, and the Pritzker School of Molecular Engineering, has been appointed as Chair of the Department of Chemistry, effective July 1, 2026, through June 30, 2029.
Guillaume Bal
Guillaume Bal, Professor in the Departments of Statistics and Mathematics, has been reappointed as Director of the Committee on Computational and Applied Mathematics, effective July 1, 2026, through June 30, 2029. Bal has served in this role since 2023.
Hank Hoffmann
Hank Hoffmann, Liew Family Chair and Professor, has been reappointed as Chair of the Department of Computer Science, effective July 1, 2026, through June 30, 2029. Hoffmann has served as chair since 2023.
Mike Franklin
Mike Franklin, Morton D. Hull Distinguished Service Professor of Computer Science and Senior Advisor to the Provost, has been reappointed as Faculty Co-Director of the Data Science Institute, and Faculty Co-Director of the Committee on Data Science, jointly with Dan Nicolae, from July 1, 2026, through June 30, 2027.
Dan Nicolae
Dan Nicolae, Elaine M. and Samuel D. Kersten, Jr. Distinguished Service Professor of Statistics, Human Genetics, and Genetic Medicine, has been reappointed as Faculty Co-Director of the Data Science Institute, and Faculty Co-Director of the Committee on Data Science, jointly with Mike Franklin, from July 1, 2026, through June 30, 2027.
Mark Oreglia
Mark Oreglia, Professor Emeritus and Deputy Dean for Infrastructure, has been reappointed as Deputy Dean for Infrastructure, effective July 1, 2026, through June 30, 2027. Oreglia has served in this role since 2022.
Frank Calegari
Frank Calegari, Professor in the Department of Mathematics, has been appointed as Chair of the Department of Mathematics, effective July 1, 2026, through June 30, 2029. Calegari has served as associate chair since 2023.
Dave Schmitz
As previously announced, Dave Schmitz, Professor in the Department of Physics and the Enrico Fermi Institute, will become Chair of the Department of Physics, effective July 1, 2026, for a three-year term. Schmitz currently serves as Deputy Dean for Academic Affairs and previously served as Deputy Dean for Diversity and Inclusion.
Matthew Stephens
As previously announced, Matthew Stephens, Ralph W. Gerard Professor in the Departments of Statistics and Human Genetics, will return as Chair of the Department of Statistics, effective July 1, 2026, for a three-year term. Stephens previously served as chair from 2022 through 2025.
