Spring 2022 Convocation and Divisional Diploma Ceremony

PhD Ceremony

MS Ceremony

University-Wide Convocation

Convocation is a University-wide ceremony involving degree candidates from all divisions and schools. It will include the presentation of honorary degrees and an address from the Convocation speaker. Convocation Addresses consistently focus on the pursuit of knowledge and the power of ideas. The University president, Paul Alivisatos, will verbally confer degrees on candidates by division and school. Each division and school will host a separate ceremony where degree candidates will be honored individually through the presentation of diplomas or hoods.

The University of Chicago’s 2022 Convocation ceremony will be held on the Main Quadrangle on Saturday, June 4, 2022 at 9:15 a.m. CDT.

Visit the University of Chicago's Convocation website for more details.

Due to a record high number of MS candidates and their guests attending and limited seating available, we will be implementing a ticketing system for the MS ceremony. Each MS candidate who RSVP'd by the April 20 deadline and indicated they are bringing guest(s) will receive one ticket for a guest to sit in the ceremony room with degree candidates; additional guests for MS graduates may be able to be on-site at the David Rubenstein Forum and will be seated in overflow rooms with livestream viewing of the ceremony. MS candidates will receive instructions about picking up their ticket.

Please note that we are unable to guarantee guest tickets for graduates who RSVP after the deadline. All guests will be able to attend the University-wide Convocation in the morning, enjoy the lunch provided, view the livestream of the ceremony, and meet up with their graduate immediately after the ceremony.

COVID-19

We are currently planning to hold 2022 Convocation and diploma ceremony events in person. Should public health and safety conditions related to COVID-19 require alternative planning, the University and Division will inform the community as promptly as possible. Please continue to check the Go Forward website for the most up-to-date safety information and health protocols. Visitors to campus can review COVID-19 visitor information online

This convening is open to all invitees who are compliant with UChicago vaccination requirements and, because of ongoing health risks, particularly to the unvaccinated, participants are expected to adopt the risk mitigation measures (masking and social distancing, etc.) appropriate to their vaccination status as advised by public health officials or to their individual vulnerabilities as advised by a medical professional. Public convening may not be safe for all and carries a risk for contracting COVID-19, particularly for those unvaccinated. Participants will not know the vaccination status of others and should follow appropriate risk mitigation measures.

Travel and Accommodations

The University of Chicago’s 2022 Convocation Ceremony and the Physical Sciences Division’s diploma ceremony will take place on Saturday, June 4, 2022. Because several trade shows and conventions are also taking place during Convocation Weekend, hotel availability in the city of Chicago will be limited. With this in mind, we highly recommend that all hotel or alternative lodging arrangements be reserved as soon as possible.
