Autumn 2024 New Student Checklist

Incoming MS and PhD students in the Physical Sciences Division should complete the following tasks. Your department or program may have additional tasks for you to complete as you begin your studies.

MS Students

Submit Proof of Degrees

Deadline: September 1, 2024

If you have not done so already, please submit proof that you received your degree(s) from your prior institution directly to your program. 

If you are unable to provide proof of degree conferral by September 1, please be sure to communicate this to your Student Affairs Administrator so you can discuss when you expect to be able to provide proof of degree conferral. 

Complete Immunization Requirements Task (In-Person Students)

Vaccination proof due: October 25, 2024

New students participating in any University on-campus program that beings Autumn Quarter 2024 will need to show proof of immunity or have an approved exemption by October 25, 2024. 

Information about immunization requirements and how to upload proof of vaccination is available on the Student Wellness Immunizations website

Enroll/Waive University Student Health Insurance Program (U-SHIP) (MS Students Only)

All MS students who are eligible for U-SHIP must confirm enrollment in U-SHIP or waive U-SHIP by submitting proof of comparable coverage. The deadline to do so is typically the Friday of third week of Autumn Quarter. More information is available on the insurance website

If you are eligible for U-SHIP and do not take action by the deadline, you will be automatically enrolled in U-SHIP for the 2024-2025 academic year and be responsible for paying the quarterly insurance premiums. 

Note: Students in MS in Applied Data Science part-time program and online-only program are not eligible for U-SHIP coverage and do not need to take any action related to insurance. 

Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) Training - Statistics and Computational and Applied Mathematics MS students only

Statistics and Computational and Applied Mathematics MS students must complete and obtain certification in the Responsible Conduct of Research through the Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI). Please review the instructions on the PSD’s website. The instructions link directly to the training, and you will complete CITI training entirely online.

Statistics and Computational and Applied Mathematics MS students students must complete the CITI program RCR training and earn certification by the end of your first quarter. We strongly recommend you complete your training prior to the start of Autumn Quarter (September 30). The deadline to complete the training is October 18, 2024. The training will ensure you are better prepared for your ethical responsibilities as academic researchers.

Sexual Misconduct Awareness and Prevention Training 

You will receive information about how to complete the sexual misconduct awareness and prevention training early in Autumn Quarter. The training is mandatory for all members of the University of Chicago community including students, faculty, other academic appointees, staff, and postdoctoral researchers. You must complete this training by the deadline provided in the notification you receive. 

Annual Confirmation Task

You will receive information about completing the annual confirmation task early in Autumn Quarter. Each year, new and returning students must complete their annual confirmation task to ensure we have up-to-date records for contact information. Instructions for completing the Annual Confirmation task are available on the Registrar's website

International Students Only - Complete your Online Check-in with OIA After Arrival

International students arriving in the US on a student visa (F and J visa holders, SEVIS transfers) must complete the online check-in process with OIA within 5 days of arriving in the US

Submit a Photo for your UChicago ID card

Students should submit a photo of themselves for their UChicago Card (the ID card you use to access campus buildings and resources) by visiting https://myphoto.uchicago.edu/

UChicago Cards will be available for pick-up by appointment at the ID & Privileges Office

PhD Students

Update Address and Direct Deposit Information

PhD students should update their addresses in my.uchicago.edu and Workday once they receive a message that their Workday profile is ready. PhD students should also add direct deposit information in Workday. Instructions for updating this information are below:

Sexual Misconduct Awareness and Prevention Training 

You will receive information about how to complete the sexual misconduct awareness and prevention training early in Autumn Quarter.
